Interior Design Trends for 2017

Guest post by Property Divison

The New Year is just around the corner and for some of you, this might lead to thoughts of what the new trends that will be filling shops – and possibly your own home – might be. There are some changes from the 2016 ‘looks’ but there should be something new to suit almost everyone.

According to a number of UK interior design bloggers, the return of bold design is expected in 2017. While more people may choose to stay in their home rather than move, due to Brexit and Trump-related economic uncertainty, they could turn to exciting design elements in order to freshen up their up home.

“2016 has featured a lot of natural, calm colours so a contrast to that will be welcome,” said Newington Green based estate agency M&M Property. “It will be interesting to see what the ‘boldness’ will mean for different people.”

More Natural Materials

Natural materials have been popular in 2016 with rattan and up-cycling of old furniture prominent in stores and online. In 2017, this trend is expected to remain centre-stage and more natural materials will gain recognition, including: cork walls, faux fur rugs and tree stump tables being used in the design of furniture and decorative feature pieces.

03b86864v2This trend builds on the ‘bringing the outdoors, indoors’ ideas that have been around 2016, so people may be more confident in how they design their ‘natural’ room.

It also means homeowners can make just one or two key purchases to give their rooms or home a refresh without having to spend or change things up too much.

“New trends that build on existing design details can make people feel as though they know a little bit about interior design and that can give them the confidence to buy a great new item to compliment their existing ‘look’,” said Plaza Estates, Knightsbridge-based estate agency.

Zone Your Home

With open plan living taking over, zoning your home is expected to be a key trend for interiors in 2017. If you love reading, you could create a corner or nook that is inviting for readers. Throw some cushions around, get a rocking chair and have a nice easy-to-reach spot to put a mug of tea or coffee.

Or, if you want a crafting spot for your kids or a sewing corner for yourself, pick out the best spot, find the right size and shaped tables and chairs or stools and you’ve got a lovely little making zone, or area. You can then add some cute storage tubs for the children and some Cath Kidston-inspired details for your own crafty bits and pieces.

“Zoning is a great way to add cosiness to an open plan home and also to break down larger spaces while still keeping a bright and airy feel,” said Lawsons & Daughters, Fulham estate agent. “It’s also a great way to add personality and put your own stamp on a clean looking and open space.”

Of course, interior design trends come and go, so if you aren’t keen on the ones detailed here, you can just do your own thing. Or, you could take a look at a mock-up new trend in a shop and see if it might look better in the flesh than in your imagination. Another option is to wait and see what 2018 might bring!
